About howmanyinches
howmanyinches answers one kind of question: how many inches. How many inches of snow fell in your town last night, and how many inches are in a foot, a meter, 20 centimeters or a height like 5 feet 7. The site is written for adults in the United States who want the number first and the explanation after it.
Where the numbers come from
Snow totals are read from the National Snowfall Analysis that NOAA's National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center publishes twice a day. Our server picks out the value for 4,800+ towns of 5,000 people or more in the lower 48 states. Normal yearly snowfall comes from NOAA's 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals. Conversions use the exact international inch, 2.54 centimeters.
What the site is not
It is not an official weather service, a forecast or a warning system. Snow figures are estimates for grid cells a few miles across; they are not for travel or safety decisions. For warnings, use your local National Weather Service office.
Who runs the site
howmanyinches is an independent project of a small team that builds free reference websites. It is not affiliated with NOAA or any government agency. There are no accounts and no forms that collect personal data.
